Sharing a guest testimonial with photo to share in thanks to Larry and Vicky during stay at our Idaho Lazy J Ranch.
My wife and I followed the pickup over and up on a steep mountain road. We passed through wooded and brushy canyons with long open views.
Good looking deer country, I thought, but not a deer in sight.
When we arrived, we introduced ourselves to the folks in the pickup who were the lodge owners, Larry and Vicky.
We had arrived at the Lazy J Ranch.
The Lazy J lodge is large and spacious, and with the owners accompanying us, they were very welcoming. We talked of the upcoming days, the hunt, the country, and my physical abilities. I told them that because of my very recent health problem, I thought this would be my last hunt; that I would never hunt again. Outfitter and Owner, Larry Jarrett, looked at me and said: “You don’t have to stop hunting. You just need to change the way you hunt.”
You’ve got to experience the Lazy J Ranch.
Private, scenic, and comfortable, with just a touch above being “off the grid”. The coffee is always on, the food is always good and plenty, the atmosphere easy and relaxing. And the hunting…….the same relaxed and comfortable feeling!
Hunt from a stand, and pick the stand you want at the time of day you want.
Deer? Lot’s of them! How about 60 in a day?!
Bucks and does. No monsters, but deer to get you excited and your blood pumping!
I took the deer I wanted. A four point Idaho whitetail from Lewis and Clark country that will be just perfect for eating.
And game care after the hunt?
That was perfect, too. Outfitter Larry Jarrett had my deer gutted, skinned, and cleaned in less than one hour. I’d never done that before.
You are so right, Larry Jarrett! I don’t have to stop hunting. I just have to change the way I hunt. You showed it to me. It was great.
Thank you. Let’s go hunting again!
This past October I had the distinct pleasure of hunting with Larry Jarrett at his Idaho ranch.
Larry Jarrett runs his hunts for a full 8 days and I can honestly say that I have never seen so much and varied wild game in my life.
His 1400 acres is alive with deer, elk, black bear, turkey, ring-neck pheasants, and California Quail. His lodge is full of north American trophies, is magnificently furnished and sits atop one of the Bitterroot ridges (foothills of the Rocky Mountain Range) with a breathtaking view.
Larry’s other half, Vicky, is the perfect outdoors woman, preparing excellent meals and providing wonderful company. Oh yes…..she is responsible for MANY of the magnificent trophies hanging on the wall!
I have been on 15 to 20 guided hunts in my 68 years ranging from Hawaii to Newfoundland and can say I saw MORE GAME on Larry’s whitetail hunt than I have on any other, and the facilities are the best.
I recommend this hunt, without reservation. Quite simply, it is the finest guided hunt I have ever been on.

I started hunting with Larry Jarrett about 2010, and have been to his Stites, ID ranch every season – sometimes twice a season – every year since.
I was unfamiliar with “stand” hunting before hunting with Larry. My normal approach had been “spot and stalk,” and admittedly I was a bit dubious with the thought of sitting and glassing for hours. Those doubts passed quickly, and it’s now my favorite style of hunting. I can tell you that after at least ten hunts on his ranch, with each day consisting of a morning and afternoon stand, I have never once NOT seen deer! That’s an astounding record if you think about it! Never once have I sat on a stand and not seen at least one deer, or several, including many bucks.
One memorable morning, as daylight began to brighten my surroundings enough to see, deer started to appear. Everywhere! By the time Larry came to retrieve me for breakfast (about 10:30AM), I had counted over 70, including 17 bucks! I let the morning pass without firing a shot, preferring to wait for other options.
And you’ll see not only mulies and white tail deer, but the observant hunter will spot anything from coyotes to black bear, elk, turkeys and pheasant, and if you’re truly lucky, perhaps even a mountain lion.
Larry’s significant other, Vicki, is the real backbone of the entire Lazy J ranch. She will cook two outstanding meals a day, send you out with a box lunch, provide pre-dinner snacks, tend the wood stove, clean up, and, now get this, when Larry’s called away or otherwise occupied, she takes over his job, right down to tracking and field dressing! I am in awe of her.
Larry and Vicki have done a terrific job, and over the many years I’ve returned there, I’ve seen improvements every year, from new stands to feed plots (planted grass/alfalfa, not bait!), and even watering holes, all designed to improve his deer herd – and it’s working! I’ve seen better quality deer these last two or three years, and this year I left several very nice bucks out there to breed! They’re still there!
